Night Vision

How the World's Wisest Leaders See What Everyone Else Misses

What if the greatest threat to your leadership isn't what you can't do, but what you can't see? Dr. Peter Eric Jones introduces a new framework for the skill that makes every other leadership competency work: perception.

Night Vision: How the World's Wisest Leaders See What Everyone Else Misses by Dr. Peter Eric Jones, Ed.D.

The leadership skill no one is teaching

The shelves are full of books on what leaders should do. Execute. Inspire. Delegate. Communicate. But almost none address the skill that makes all the others work: how leaders see.

When a leader can see clearly, every other leadership skill becomes more effective. When a leader cannot, even the most sophisticated strategies rest on assumptions that have not been tested against reality.

Drawing on more than three decades of experience across Fortune 500 boardrooms, church sanctuaries, and coaching conversations, Dr. Jones introduces the OWL Leadership Framework and the ROOTS diagnostic: practical tools for developing the multi-focal perception that separates wise leaders from merely competent ones.

Explore the Framework

Observe. Widen. Lead.

A rhythm of discernment, not a linear checklist, that equips leaders with a disciplined, multi-focal way of seeing.

O

Observe

Train yourself to perceive your environment with multi-focal precision. Develop distinct modes of attention, from razor focus to wide-angle awareness to navigating confidently when the data is incomplete and the path forward is obscured.

W

Widen

Move beyond observation into interpretation. Connect what you see to a deeper sense of purpose, exercise empathy and strategic patience, and develop the intellectual humility required to see a situation from perspectives other than your own.

L

Lead

Translate insight into action. All the perception and wisdom in the world remain inert until you have the courage to make decisions, mobilize people, and create tangible outcomes in the real world.

The perceptual disciplines every leader must develop

Like an owl's eyes, engineered for five distinct survival functions, your leadership depends on shifting between these modes with agility and purpose.

Central Vision

Binocular Focus: holding mission and people in a single field of view. One eye on results, one on the human beings delivering them.

"Am I seeing the whole person, or just their output?"

Peripheral Vision

Scanning for weak signals at the edges of your awareness: market shifts, cultural undercurrents, emerging threats before they arrive.

"What am I not looking at right now?"

Low-Light Vision

Leading through uncertainty when data is incomplete. Anchoring decisions in values when the familiar landmarks have vanished.

"What values guide me when certainty is unavailable?"

Temporal Focus

Balancing the urgent demands of today with the strategic investments that determine tomorrow's relevance.

"Is the urgent consuming the important?"

High-Contrast Vision

Filtering the essential from the distracting. Protecting your team's capacity to do meaningful work without being torn apart by external noise.

"What truly threatens my team's health?"
